Tao Yu nodded.

"Name's Chang Qingshan. Call me Old Chang," he said, eyeing her. "Good, good. Young lad, full of spirit."

He then launched into a stream of irrelevant chatter. When he still hadn't mentioned work, Tao Yu interrupted politely. "Old Chang, could you show me around? What should I keep in mind on the job?"

Old Chang, annoyed at the interruption, cooled his tone. "This isn't your average prison. Not many rules. Just do your job, mind your own business, and you'll be fine. As for the environment, you can see for yourself. I'm busy."

…Busy drinking tea? Tao Yu gave him a look. "What constitutes 'minding my own business'?"

"Everything from meal planning to prisoner squabbles and fights," Old Chang said impatiently. "None of your concern."

"…Then what is my concern?" Tao Yu asked, her lips twitching.

Old Chang squinted at her. "Keep an eye on your assigned area. Don't let anyone escape this island."

"…Right." The job sounded easier than being a psychologist. Tao Yu stood up and nodded. "I'll go familiarize myself with the environment then."

Old Chang grunted, a sneer playing on his lips. He'd been here for years and hadn't seen many youngsters last. The work seemed easy, but it meant dealing with deranged killers day in and day out. Eventually, even sane men started to crack.

Tao Yu made her rounds, drawing stares wherever she went. Her uniform stood out starkly amidst the sea of blue-green.

The island was neither large nor small. Besides the three-building prison District, there was a furniture factory where inmates worked with wood. There was also a basketball court, a running track, and a cinema, a surprisingly extensive range of recreational facilities.

Tao Yu encountered two brawls. The inmates didn't even bother stopping when she passed, as if she were invisible. She walked by, her gaze straight ahead. Everything here was virtual, not worth her attention. Her only focus was the alternate personality.

Thinking this, she approached a third fight, intending to ignore it as before. But a wooden rod flew towards her face. She blinked, trying to pretend she hadn't seen it.

"Hey, little guard, toss me that stick."

A familiar, lazy voice called out. Tao Yu looked over and saw Yue Linze, holding another man by the collar, grinning at her. The heavyset man and his crew were fighting alongside him.

Tao Yu's lips twitched. Speak of the devil.

Yue Linze's request had been a casual aside during the fight. He hadn't expected her to actually help. He punched the man he was holding, and Tao Yu clearly saw a tooth fly out.

She rolled her eyes. This alternate personality was incredibly immature. Annoyed, she picked up the rod and threw it to him.

Mid-fight, Yue Linze instinctively caught it, thinking it was an attack. He paused, realizing the feel was different, then grinned at Tao Yu. "Thanks, little guard."

Tao Yu gave a cold smile. Seeing him gaining the upper hand, she turned to leave. Suddenly, a dozen men charged towards them. She was about to ignore them when Yue Linze cursed. She stopped.

These newcomers were clearly not on Yue Linze's side. Tao Yu frowned, watching with concern as Yue Linze's group was quickly overwhelmed.

These men were vicious thugs, fighting dirty and without restraint. Despite his skill, Yue Linze couldn't hold his own against so many.

At this rate, the alternate personality would be dead before she could address his problem. Tao Yu panicked. She blew her whistle and yelled, "What are you doing?! Stop!"

The fighting paused momentarily, then resumed. Tao Yu fumed. She grabbed her radio. "Old Chang! Get out here! There's a riot! Someone's going to die!"

Static crackled over the radio, followed by Old Chang's lazy voice. "Don't worry about it. Let them be."

"…Someone's dying and you don't care? What are we guards for?!" Tao Yu exclaimed, but Old Chang didn't respond, clearly unconcerned.

Tao Yu rolled her eyes and yelled into the radio, "You don't care, I do!" She tossed the radio aside and charged into the fray, baton raised.

Hearing the commotion, Old Chang cursed and ran outside.

Because Tao Yu was in full uniform, and the inmates didn't want a direct confrontation with a guard, her presence had an effect. As she stood beside Yue Linze, the heavyset man and his group quickly retreated to her side, easing the pressure on Yue Linze.

Tao Yu intended to pull him out of the fight, but now that he had backup, he took advantage, punching the nearest opponent.

After landing the blow, he gave Tao Yu a cocky look, seemingly unconcerned by the bruises on his face. He grinned, his lips bloody. "Little guard, can't bear to see me get hurt, can you?"

"Shut up," Tao Yu snapped, realizing this alternate personality was a punk who couldn't be coddled.
