Darkness enveloped her. When she opened her eyes again, she was in the familiar room. She stared at the clock on the wall, stunned. Months in the mental world had equated to a mere two hours here.
She sat on the sofa for a long time, silently removing the various instruments from her head. Then she walked to the bed and looked at the sleeping man.
This was the man who had commissioned her, Yue Linze. He had the same face as the man who had just confessed his love, yet everything about him, his aura, the curve of his lips in sleep, was different.
She stood there, watching him, knowing that when he woke, he would remember nothing of what had transpired in his alternate personality's world. And she would have to pretend the same.
Tao Yu took a deep breath. The moment Yue Linze opened his eyes, she resumed her professional demeanor. "Mr. Yue, you're awake."
Yue Linze looked at her, and for a fleeting moment, Tao Yu thought she saw the CEO persona in his eyes. Her heart leaped.
"Resolved?" Yue Linze asked, his tone distant.
His voice eased her fears, making her previous suspicion seem ridiculous. When an alternate personality receded, its memories usually vanished. There were only two recorded cases of perfect memory integration between primary and alternate personalities, a probability too small to consider.
Yue Linze's behavior clearly indicated he belonged to the majority who forgot.
Thankfully. If he remembered, he would know her deception. She didn't see that as a positive development.
Tao Yu smiled. "Rest assured, Mr. Yue, the CEO personality has been resolved."
"Thank you for your hard work," Yue Linze said coldly.
Tao Yu maintained her smile. "It's my duty. If you feel up to it, Mr. Yue, shall we continue?"
Yue Linze gave no answer, simply staring at her impassively. Unnerved by his gaze, Tao Yu pressed on. "It's only been two hours since the last session. Given your constitution, I believe continuing wouldn't be a problem. Unless you'd prefer to rest?"
Tao Yu watched him, waiting for his decision. While she wanted to strike while the iron was hot, resolve as many personalities as possible, and secure her payment before Yue Linze discovered her charade, she couldn't force him. Still, she doubted he'd refuse. What patient didn't want a speedy recovery?
"Who's next?" Yue Linze asked, as expected.
Tao Yu perked up. "A prisoner. He took the fall for his father and is incarcerated on an island prison. After I hypnotize you, I'll appear as a prison guard."
"A female guard?" Yue Linze glanced at her.
Tao Yu smiled, understanding his concern. Why would there be a female guard in a male prison? She winked. "It's more plausible than a female inmate." Altering her gender through hypnosis was too difficult; disguising herself was easier, but she wasn't about to reveal that weakness to him.
Yue Linze's impassive stare showed no reaction to her attempt at humor. Tao Yu belatedly realized her expression had been too flippant. She gave an awkward laugh. "Apologies. I was… familiar with the CEO personality and momentarily forgot myself." She'd almost forgotten this wasn't her obsessive 'boyfriend.'
"Familiar?" Yue Linze's gaze sharpened.
"Just acquainted. Half an acquaintance, at most." The primary personality was the true owner of this body. Being too familiar with an alternate personality could offend the primary one. She quickly distanced herself.
Too late, it seemed. The air around Yue Linze grew colder. When he didn't respond, she pretended nothing had happened. "Mr. Yue, shall we continue?"
After he nodded, she returned to her sofa and put on the instruments. The sofa and bed were aligned, placing them face to face.
Tao Yu took a deep breath and lit the hypnosis incense. As the delicate fragrance drifted, she nodded to Yue Linze, signaling the start.
Yue Linze watched her for a moment. "Do you have any candy?"
Tao Yu paused, her hand instinctively going to her pocket. She looked at him, puzzled. "What do you need candy for?"
"I suddenly have a craving," Yue Linze said, meeting her gaze. "Shouldn't a doctor's pockets be filled with candy?"
…No doctor besides her carried candy in their pockets. The odd feeling intensified. She kept her voice neutral. "I apologize, Mr. Yue. I'm not a pediatrician. I don't have the habit of carrying candy or toys."
"Is that so? A pity. The previous doctor always gave me candy," Yue Linze said mildly. He then looked at Tao Yu and made a phone call. "Bring in the candy the last doctor left."
Tao Yu was taken aback. He'd actually called someone. Half of her suspicion dissipated. Three minutes later, a servant entered with a half-plate of candy, dispelling the rest.
Yue Linze picked a round hard candy, popped it in his mouth, and closed his eyes.
Tao Yu breathed a sigh of relief and focused on the hypnosis.
